The Write Your Stank! Writing Assembly is an interactive and creative school assembly for 3rd-5th graders that teaches kids how to morph their personal experiences into fun and epic stories.

I do this by:

• Inviting the students to find their “stank” (aka passion) by going on a rant. They get to let out all their thoughts and feelings that are built up inside them.

• Developing main characters from their stanky rant. For example, if they rant about a feisty squirrel, then let’s write a story about that feisty squirrel!

• Giving the main character a “want” that leads them onto an epic journey.

• Imagining what that character comes up against on their journey.

• And finally, how does the journey change the main character?

This assembly is incredibly fun because the students drive the experience, we all play together as a writing team to sculpt a fun and authentic story. To make this assembly active, students are invited to come to the front of the room and act out plot points as we write together.

I reference popular characters like SpongeBob and the cast of K-Pop Demon Hunters to help build practical understandings of these dramatic elements.

The assembly can be given to either a large group (up to 200 students) or a smaller classroom setting. Depending on school schedules, the assembly can vary in length, with 30-45 minutes being the preferred time frame.
